Tom Rose - April 2025
Selma Fernandes moved from India to New Zealand in December of 2019 and experienced a series of miscarriages. After giving birth to her son, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2022 when he was just 7 months old. Following a mastectomy and treatment, Selma got tired of sitting at home for three months and sought out work. She got a job at McDonalds, which proved to be "too tough" on her body. She then got another job as a kitchen hand, which was not any easier. Eventually she found a job as a healthcare assistant in a hospital. "They work to accommodate me, and they make sure that I get light duties," Fernandes said.
"I never wanted to be dependent on anybody ... and then I had to be dependent on my husband until I started working [again]"
