Tom Wong was working as an analyst at a bank when he received a cancer diagnosis. He spent nearly two years in treatment, unable to work. Eventually he returned to his job at the bank saying, "I welcomed it. I wanted the chance to focus on something besides cancer...I enjoyed my job [and] I appreciated the people, because they really supported me as I was going through cancer."
However after a few years he was feeling unfulfilled and decided to switch careers by accepting a position with the Yonge Street Mission, an organization that responds to the immediate needs of people experiencing poverty. "I wanted to be an example for [people] who worked so hard they’d forgotten the importance of work-life balance, to show them that working hard need not feel like hard work. Rather, the joy and purpose received from work is part of the life balance we seek."
