Pedro Canas has worked for over a decade as a paramedic and the last seven years as a firefighter as well. In December 2022, Canas's doctors discovered a tumor on his kidney that had spread to his lungs. In the midst of treatment Canas's claim for benefits was denied because he wasn't a full-time firefighter. 

Following some work with his union, he received a check to cover medical costs, and he is now back to work, serving a community he loves. “It gives me purpose...I love what I do.”
