Linda Caicedo is making a big splash at the World Cup. The 18-year-old has been playing soccer professionally in Colombia since she was 14. Her career was interrupted when diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 15. She took a break from playing to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.
“I remember I was going into surgery one day and I was feeling really bad,” Caicedo said, “because I thought that I was not going to be able to play top-level football again.”
Two years after being diagnosed, Caicedo was back on the field and in the finals of Copa America Femenina. Colombia ultimately lost, but Caicedo was named the best player of the tournament.
