Joe Bongiorno - May 2023
Lina Courtois, aged 72, competed in the Canadian Artistic Swimming Championship where she won silver and gold medals. She also took gold in the 100-metre butterfly and 400-metre individual medley at the Canadians Masters Swimming Championships. All of this amid chemotherapy treatments.
Courtois is a lifelong swimmer and former physical education teacher. Last September she decided to compete for the top prizes in artistic swimming. Three months later she was diagnoses with breast cancer, but was not going to give up her goal.
"I have a competitive spirit. I want to see if I can improve. Like when I swim the butterfly, if my time gets better, my health gets better, so I really need to be tested. It's not training just for the fun of it," she said.
