According to a study of adult survivors of childhood cancer, conducted by St. Jude Research Hospital many are experiencing financial hardship associated with both sociodemographic status and later appearing medical effects. The study, which was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, looked at the financial hardship, determinant and consequences among 2,811 childhood cancer survivors.
Costly follow-up testing, potential insurance problems, and work disruptions were some of the noted issues childhood survivors are facing. The study's authors concluded that a "substantial proportion of adult survivors of childhood cancer experienced financial hardship" and "survivors with financial hardship had an increased risk of symptom prevalence and impaired health-related quality of life."
