Researchers are focusing in on the importance of healthcare professionals' awareness that their cancer patients battle "financial toxicity", in addition to their disease. According to a new study, in the journal Cancer, the costs associated with diagnosis and treatment, even for those with insurance, frequently create hardship and distress.
Following the surveying of hundreds of doctors, and thousands of patients, researchers came to the conclusion that the "financial devastation that many patients face" is not being adequately addressed by their treating providers. Of note also, is that financial toxicity is potentially going to influence their health, making it clear that not only is this an important aspect for providers to understand, it is also part of their job.
