Though for Ralph Parkman, the possibility of prostate cancer was likely due to his age group, it still took three biopsies and months of convincing before he was actually diagnosed. As an elementary school math teacher, Parkman did not take missing school lightly.
Parkman decided to do his treatments at a clinic closer to school so he was able to schedule everything for after school and not miss any class time. He stated that not missing school was extremely important to him. His doctor, Dr. Anand Shavnani added, "He didn't have to stop working...that can be an added stress." Many fellow teachers and administrators did not even know Parkman was sick, so skilled was he at balancing work and treatment.
