A pilot study conducted at The Ohio State University found the use of dance as therapy could improve balance and reduce fall risk among cancer patients with peripheral neuropathy. Lisa Worthen-Chaudhari, physical rehabilitation specialist, notes the importance of this with the increase in cancer survival. According to a university press release, up to 70% of patients treated with chemo experience neuropathy and on in three will continue to experience the condition at 6 months post-treatment.
As Worthen-Chaudhari pointed out, there are higher rates of surviving cancer, which means there needs to be more focus on how to improve quality of life following cancer. While many patients have reported difficulty staying committed to physical therapy due to it feeling like work and it being hard, however patients have engaging in dancing as therapy have reported it is enjoyable and a positive experience.
