Eight-year police veteran Efren Canas returned to work last Wednesday after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy for lung cancer. Canas said he received lots of support from his fellow officers as well as the Silver City Fire Department and the sheriff's office.

"I had butterflies my first day back to work," Canas said. "I felt like I was starting brand new all over again. I was nervous, but it felt good to put the uniform back on again and serve the public. It felt good to be with my co-workers again and to also get back into my routine."
