After giving up a design job in NYC to work with horses thirty years ago, Stacey Small found this decision has very much impacted the way in which she dealt with her cancer. Small studied holistic treatments for racehorses, and has found this knowledge to be very useful in managing her own health and diagnosis.
Small began to experiment with the incorporation of herbs into horses lives, as based on the teachings of Chinese medicine. When diagnosed with multiple myeloma, she was put on chemotherapy, a difficult thing to accept for someone so attached to alternative medicine. To combat the havoc the chemotherapy had on her immune system, Small continued her use of probiotics and digestive enzymes, stating "I had a lot of tools in my toolbox, which I learned from the horses. It's all a circle."
