Steve Julian's wife, Felicia, recognized that his recent onset of forgetfulness and "brain farts" were not just a symptom of middle age and Julian was diagnosed with a brain tumor soon after.Felicia's been able to take time off to be with her husband. They've realized the support from online communities can be a real comfort.
Felicia began using the website, Caring Bridge, to help give updates to family and friends of Julian's condition and to receive encouragement. The site has given them both the opportunity to reach out to people without having to go through the exhausting re-telling of the situation over and over. Though many can view an online community as distant, in a sensitive time when people are ill and lacking energy, it gives an opportunity to connect with others when they are up for it.
