Nicola Porter was off of work for almost a year as she underwent treatment for breast cancer.Throughout her time off, Porter made sure to remain in regular contact with her employer and received useful information from the Macmillan Cancer Support Group. This was all helpful in her eventual transition back to work.
Porter made a gradual return to work, phasing in beginning in March and making a return to full time work in May. She states she was eager to return to full time work. While she was supported by colleagues and credits that as being really helpful, she does feel that a referral to occupational health sooner rather than later would have been helpful. Though her colleagues were warm and welcoming, she did struggle with feelings of being a 'newcomer' after being off for a year.
