Matthew Cooper - March 2016
In a recent statement to an employment tribunal hearing his claim for disability discrimination, Jonas Gutierrez, 32-year old star athlete of the Newcastle team, accused the team of ensuring he did not make enough appearances to trigger a one-year contract extension.
Following his cancer treatment, upon telling the managers he was ready to play again, he was told he would no longer be with their team and he was free to join another team. Gutierrez states. "I was very shocked by the club's sudden change of heart about me, particularly as I had played in 194 games for the club at this point and was one of the key first team players."
Gutierrez also notes that during his chemotherapy treatment, neither the manager nor any club directors contacted him to see how he was feeling or to congratulate him on his recovery.
