Cancer represents a wide range of diagnoses, treatments, side effects and recovery process. This can make it difficult for employers to know how to react and how to provide the most appropriate and helpful support to an employee that is diagnosed. Preparation can provide both employer and employee with a solid footing to address their situation.
Chief mission officer of Cancer and Careers, Rebecca Nellis, outlines a number of tips to support an employee with cancer including knowing about company policy in terms of flexible work, paid time off, and leave banks as well as developing a familiarity with laws that are for protecting employees in the workplace such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
