It is important not to assume that those with metastatic disease will want to quit work. Patients should be asked how they view and value their jobs and then should be worked with to figure out how to pursue the path they wish to follow.While returning to work following treatment is a topic often discussed within the survivorship community, working while receiving treatment remains relatively ignored.
A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison looked at factors associated with employment changes among people with metastatic cancer. Though the reasons why many patients continued to work varied, the results suggested that one should not assume that people diagnosed with metastatic disease will want to quit work and that it would behoove everyone to work with the patients to address their needs in order to continue to work through treatment.
