In response to the recent New York Times article about the work culture and environment at Amazon, Julia Cheiffetz, a former Amazon employee, wrote a piece about her experience as both a new mother and cancer patient while working there. While on maternity leave, and 6 weeks after her daughter was born, Cheiffetz was diagnosed with cancer. She encountered problems with her health insurance and when she returned to work 5 months later found out that her direct reports no longer reported to her and was placed on a "performance improvement plan". She resigned not long after.
