Education Correspondent Dan Russell of the Nottingham Post talked with Sharon Smith about how her cancer battle drove her to get back to the classroom, rather than letting it end her career.
Smith was in her late thirties and a newly appointed head teacher of a secondary school in the U.K. when she was diagnosed with cancer. She had to take six months off work for treatment, then upon her return, gave up her leadership responsibilities to allow her body to recover while she continued classroom teaching. But not long after, she was given new responsibilities and became assistant head -- allowing her to get back on track for her successful career.
