Metro News Canada recently published an important article looking at the impact that a cancer diagnosis has on low-income workers. The article highlights this impact by sharing the story of Dorcas Martey, a daycare worker who was diagnosed with lymphoma and had no paid sick leave or benefits. It ended up being her work community that came to her aid:
"Now the single mother of two is in her second bout with cancer. But this time, her Toronto daycare community has rallied to try to fill the public health gap that wreaked havoc on Martey’s life and struck a chord with colleagues and parents. 'Cancer is a devastating diagnosis for anybody,' says Omo Akintan, whose two children attend Children’s Circle daycare on the Danforth. 'But like so many things, the impact on people who are on low income and limited supports is so much more.'"
