Sheriff Steve Keane, of Benton County in Washington, was diagnosed with colon cancer in August. Despite surgery and chemotherapy treatments, Keane has missed little work and has continued his involvement in major investigations.
He said he has found ways to manage the side effects so it doesn't affect his work too much. He works from home in the afternoon when he tends to feel run down and keeps his iPhone close by during chemo to stay connected to happenings at the sheriff's office. Keane also continues to help out at the day care that he owns with his wife.
“I feel like I have to go to work every day,” Keane said. “I feel like I have to be there. I have a responsibility.”
