John Bonamego, CMU football coach, got to ring in a different type of victory than he's used to. The game-winning coach rang the victory bell at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor upon completing his radiation treatment.
Bonamego continued to coach his team while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Despite suffering symptoms such as decreased ability to taste, mouth sores, and splitting fingernails and toe nails, he defied them and went back to coaching, never missing a practice or a meeting. Colleague and fellow coach, Jim Caldwell, admiringly states "he's a battler, wanted no pity and did a great job coming through and leading his team, which is difficult."
