Cancer represents a wide range of diagnoses, treatments, side effects, and recovery processes. Each survivors experience is handled differently and is unique. With this in mind it is important, as an HR professional or manager, that one is not expected to understand all the variables, but rather, there are certain steps that can be taken so there is better clarity and support for the employee.
Cancer and Careers' Chief Mission Officer, Rebecca Nellis, gives a walk through of what to know, what to say, and how to start the conversation. It is important to work with the survivor to know how to best help them be their most efficient and successful self. Nellis notes, "helping an employee with cancer feel comfortable in their work space can be incredibly useful in the face of treatment side effects and general fatigue."
