Heather Becker - October 2015
Heather Becker, research scientist at the School of Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin, feels it is high time the rally behind breast cancer includes helping cancer patients get back to a "normal" work life. Becker discusses the unfortunate reality of "chemobrain" and the effects this can have on a cancer survivors' ability to properly do their job.
Becker notes the need for employers to be aware of the cognitive difficulties that come along with cancer treatment, as many often just consider the physical symptoms experienced by their employees. With many cancer survivors retiring or quitting earlier than they had planned, or cutting back their hours, many are feeling a major financial strain. Becker discusses a number of strategies and accommodations that could help employees keep and do their jobs efficiently while dealing with cancer side effects.
