The Maine Breast Cancer Coalition supports people with breast cancer, both emotionally and financially. The Support Service Fund provides financial assistance to women struggling to get by while fighting for their lives. WCSH 6 Portland profiled the organization and shared the story of one woman who struggled to work and make ends meet while battling breast cancer.
Nichole Belanger was diagnosed in 2012 and was a single mother who owned her own hair salon. She had a hard time running the salon, raising her son and handling treatment. Speaking of her experience, Nicole said, " 'If it wasn't for the coalition I would have had to cancel my next surgery and put that on hold and when you have cancer you don't want to put things on hold because you want to put things behind you.' "
