Steve Elzer - September 2014
Steve Elzer, a former PR executive at Sony, recently wrote a piece for the Hollywood Reporter on his experience with managing his health after a cancer diagnosis while continuing to work at Sony. In his article, Elzer discusses his decision to share the news with his bosses and some members of his team, as well as post health updates to social media to combat rumors. In discussing his own workplace disclosure, he said "...I told a few direct members of my team and my bosses at Sony, all of whom could not have been more caring or supportive."
Deciding who and when to tell is a personal choice, as is sharing the news publicly or on social media. Cancer and Careers encourages patients and survivors to take the time to really think through if and how they want to disclose. Furthermore, it's important to understand that once information is shared via social media, blogs, etc. it is out there for anyone to find - today and in the future; a truth that both patient and survivors should be sure they're comfortable with.
