Marc P. on September 28, 2012
I was Diagnosed with:
Heptocellular Carcinoma (Primary Liver Cancer)
Employment Status:
Full Time
Gender/Age:
Male/63
Type and Description of Treatments:
So far I have had one TACE procedure. (TransArtirialCatheterEblation)
How do you feel today?
I feel OK. I don't feel phyisically different, knowing that I have Cancer. I have been dealing with the side effects of Stage four Cirhosis of the Liver and chronic hepatitus-C for about 5 years. So I can't say that anything has really changed.
Since the diagnosis, what has changed in your life?
My diet has changed. I have met a lot of people that I didn't know before. My relationship with God has changed for the better.
What is going well for you right now?
I am going through the process of trying to qualify for a donor liver. That is going well so far.
What is not going well for you right now?
The symptoms of my chronic illness are slowly getting worse. Muscle loss, itching, digestive issues and overall fatigue.
What has been the most challenging thing about having cancer?
Managing my time has been a stretch. Lots of appointments and interviews. 3 to 4 a week.
When difficulties overwhelm you, where do you go for support?
My lovely wife and my savior, Jesus Christ.
How have your long-term goals or life goals changed since diagnosis?
Everything has been put on hold. My new goal is to get a new healthy Liver and live another 15 years after that.
What is your work arrangement right now? What are your hours?
My work hours are 40 hours per week. Administrative assistant for a municiple government.
Since the diagnosis, what has changed in your work life?
Nothing really. I have just been having to take a lot of time off. I have the vacation hours but they are starting to run out. I am sure I will have to take advantage of FMLA and perhaps short term disability before this is over.
What has helped you continue to work the most?
Understanding and cooperation of my manager.
What advice do you have for others trying to work through treatment?
Just take it one day at time. Keep your faith. Stay greatful for the wonderful things in your life past and present and seek out the support of others.
How have you dealt with any side effects of treatment?
My side effects have been minimal so this has not been an issue.
If "today's you" could give advice to "day-of-diagnosis you," what would you say?
Just do what you have to do. Ask a lot of questions. Be thankful for the good things. Take it one day at a time.
