I left my last job in May 2021. I had gone through cancer 2x at that point. I started a podcast knowing I would be supported by my spouse. In 2023 I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I am still suffering from side effects. Because of the podcast, I have a fairly public presence. Now, I am facing the end of my marriage. That entails not only losing a place to live, but also health insurance. So, now I am trying to understand my options moving forward with income.

Hi Lorie,
Thank you so much for reaching out to Cancer and Careers. It sounds like you have really been through a lot the past few years with multiple diagnoses and now a divorce. I’m sorry that you have so much on your plate. I have a few questions just to get a better sense of the best resources for you.
First, are you able to find a safe place to stay while you sort out more permanent living arrangements? That’s obviously the most urgent and pressing, so I’d recommend finding even a temporary solution. Next, is there a way to stay on your husband’s health insurance until you can apply for your own, such as a marketplace plan or Medicaid? Are you still producing your podcast? Does that bring in any income? You mentioned having a public presence, are you able to speak more to that? Are you concerned about your cancer being public knowledge? I think in order to best help you it would help me to have a bit more detail regarding your circumstances, what you wish to do next, and what type of plan you had in mind, if any. It may be easiest for us to schedule a phone call – if you are interested please reach out to cancerandcareers@cew.org to set a time for a conversation.
I look forward to hopefully speaking with you.
Warm regards,
Nicole
