Hi Carrie, Thanks for reaching out to us! Your feelings about wanting to give back and do more meaningful work is something we hear often from people who have had cancer.
Because I do not know anything about you based upon your brief email, I will describe a three step process for identifying a new career which is also explained in my book, I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This.
First, assess your values, the skills you want to use at work, your personality preferences and any interests you have that you could turn into work. There are zillions of these kinds of tests available on line, in career books or at university/college career centers. Most states offer free career advice help as well.
Next, based upon the results of your self-assessment, identify specific jobs, functions and industries that align with your assessment results. Talking to people, researching job and career boards, and reviewing the US Labor Department's Dictionary of Occupational Titles will help you to hone in on some ideas. Then research the education, knowledge and requirements needed for whatever the job is.
Finally, start networking on LinkedIn, at job search groups and with your personal/professional network to uncover job openings.
I hope this helps!
Take care, Julie

Carrie-
Congratulations on your new career focus. I understand how you feel. Since my diagnosis in 2007, I have also adjusted my priorities and my focus to spend more time helping others,
utilizing my experience and creating a legacy.
We could provide you with some avenues to explore. It would help if you could
share a little background and your competencies and skills with me. Also, define your financial needs in your
career going forward. There are so many
opportunities to help others, particularly cancer patients and their families,
but sometimes the rewards are more in the satisfaction and contribution you
make rather than high income.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Margot
