I typically work behind the scenes but was asked to present at a conference. I accepted and am preparing my material. What does a good-looking outfit for a presenter consist of? Should I be wearing a dress? Paint suit? Black? Colors? I am new to this, so I am looking for any advice. I typically wear comfortable yoga pants and sweatshirts, so this is outside my comfort zone.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks so much for reaching out to Cancer and Careers! Congratulations on being asked to speak at a conference, that is exciting, though I know can also produce a bit of anxiety.
In terms of what to wear, I think it depends on a few factors. What kind of audience is this? What is the topic? Is your industry typically pretty buttoned up and formal? If so, if you have a pant suit that you like, go for it, but I wouldn't go out and buy one for this specifically. A nice pair of slacks and a blouse, or a dress/skirt would be fine. It's important to be comfortable as well! Since you'll be in front of an audience you'll want to think about how your outfit will make you feel comfortable and confident. So, for instance, if you are not one to wear heels, this is not the event that would make that necessary. Just think about what professional comfort looks like for you. As far as colors, I also think that's entirely up to you. Black is always a safe bet, but if you would like to wear color, there are no rules about that! And of course, accessories can help too - jewelry, a nice scarf, etc.
If you're worried you don't have anything appropriate, you can always check out a clothing rental service like Rent the Runway, so you dont have to make large purchases.
Good luck on your presentation and so thrilled for this opportunity for you!
Warmly,
