Career Change
I am a third grade teacher, and I love kids. The reason I became a teacher was to develop relationships with kids and be able to help them. The way teaching is going these days, that is becoming harder and harder. I am wondering about exploring other career paths that would allow me to truly get into more of a one on one mentoring position with kids. With all the preparation for standardized testing and making sure to hit all the common core standards, there is little time, if any, remaining to actually just sit and chat with kids and really get to know them.
I am currently out on disability completing my chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. I am 36 and open to researching and exploring all my options.
Any suggestions?

Hi Bonnie, Thanks for reaching out to us and apologies for the delayed response. We recently redesigned our website and are having some issues with the alerts when new questions come in, so I'm very sorry about that. I have sent your question over to our coaches who will be in touch soon. In the meantime, I know that it's a bit last minute, but we have a Career Change webinar today in a couple of hours that I think could be helpful for you: http://www.cancerandcareers.org/en/community/events/webinar-careerchange. If you aren't able to make it, a recording of the webinar will be posted here within the next week: http://www.cancerandcareers.org/en/community/videos/BWC. I would also recommend checking out our information under the Exploring Your Options section of the website: http://www.cancerandcareers.org/en/looking-for-work/exploring-your-options I hope this is helpful and our coaches will be in touch soon! Best, Sarah, Manager of Programs, Cancer and Careers

Hi Bonnie,
I can't tell you how many teachers I have coached recently who do not want to teach any more. Particularly elementary education. Tutoring kids is a huge business right now and I would create a target list of companies in this business and approach them to have informational meetings. I am not as sure that mentoring kids is a viable business unfortunately. I would also Google "jobs that involve working one-on-one with kids" and see what comes up. Also each state has programs for developmentally challenged kids. Or daycare centers? I would check into those. I am not sure if you are able to go back to school but pediatric nursing or social work are other options. I hope this helps to get you started on doing some research.
Take care,
Julie
