Job Search,
Work/Life/Cancer Balance
Hello!
I am a stage 4 breast cancer survivor (just reached a year with metastatic breast cancer) and I'm looking to reenter the workforce now that my trial is working well and I'm feeling well enough to work. I'm wondering, if I find a job that is full time and has long term disability benefits, would my diagnosis limit me from receiving those types of benefits since my cancer is a preexisting condition? I'm having a hard time deciding how much I should be working (part time vs full time) but would be willing to have a full time job if I had that reassurance that if things went south again with my health that I would have long term disability coverage. I'm not sure how to navigate this! Any advice is appreciated.

Hello Megan,
Thank you for reaching out to Cancer and Careers and we’re so happy to hear that your trial is going well and you’ve reached a point in which you feel ready to work!
Your question is a bit more legally-focused as there are a variety of requirements, conditions, etc that come along with disability benefits. Since we are not a legal organization, I’m afraid we’re not the best resource for you on that topic. I would recommend that you reach out to Triage Cancer (www.triagecancer.org) – a legal organization that has a plethora of information and resources regarding disability benefits, insurance, and much more.
It’s also a good idea to research the policies of employers before/during the job search and interview process. This type of early exploration can help you determine which companies will be supportive to your needs and which may not. Glassdoor can be a great resource for this, as can networking with people who work at companies of interest so you are able to get a better sense of the benefits and policies before going through an interview process. It’s definitely a good idea to make a list of what your needs are so you’re a bit more organized with your job search.
I'd also recommend that you check out some of Cancer and Careers’ job searching tools and resources for more guidance:
And always feel free to reach out to Cancer and Careers directly if you’d like to have further conversations. You can email us at cancerandcareers@cew.org.
Good luck!
