Job Search
I am a 34-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a form of Acute Leukemia some years back. I have taken some time off & am now thinking of re-entering the work force. I would really appreciate any insight in to current "hot" career paths or classes/courses worth taking. Does anyone have any advice ? Many thanks in advance !

Hi Bernadette,
Naturally it is important for you to take some self-assessments to find out what your interests, skills and values are first. Without knowing this information about you, I am giving you a generic answer.
The economy is rebounding thankfully so your timing is good. Education, healthcare and non-profits are always hiring. Consumer products and pharmaceuticals are doing pretty well too but the ease of entry is tougher.
Functionally, accounting, finance, administrative positions, fund raising, mid-level sales roles and again healthcare specific jobs are plentiful.
If you write back and tell me a little more about yourself, I can be more specific in my advice. Good luck!
Take care,
Julie

Hello Julie,
Thank you so very much for your quick response ! I was certainly vague in the way I put my question so here's a little more about my background.
I have a B.A. & have worked in the fields of both Human Services & Healthcare. I worked as a Job Coach facilitating Adults with Disabilities for some years at & I also worked at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for several years in a number of administrative roles in Human Resources, Volunteer Services and Social Work. I left in 2008 as I gave birth to my daughter and as I mentioned, I then took time off to care for her. Now I'm ready to think about getting back in to the workforce.
I was wondering specifically if you know of any "fast-track" courses or classes I could take to make me more marketable in the Healthcare field given my experience ? I would truly appreciate any insight you could give !
Also, do you offer services helping in getting a resume together ?
Many thanks again !
Bernadette

Hi Bernadette,
I am quite late in getting back to you, sorry!
Your skills are quite current and marketable thankfully. Honestly, what I would do is check out your local colleges, universities and community college courses to see what jumps out as something that you would find interesting and would make you more marketable. Sometimes it makes sense to interview informationally some healthcare professionals to learn what they are seeing as trends in healthcare.
I am happy to look at your resume if you'd like to email it here to Cancer and Careers and they can email it to me.
Thanks!
Julie
