Career Management
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on getting back into the work force. I had to give up my job due to being limited physically with Multiple Myeloma. I'm on disability and signed up for the ticket-to-work program but it is really no help. I'm afraid of losing my health insurance if I try working but am not able to stay with it due to treatment or other things. The ticket program really only had low wage offers that didn't make sense financially for me.
I have a journalism degree and am certified in graphic design. I guess I just looking for any anecdotes of similar situations that have worked out.

Hi Alexander,
Thanks for writing to us. I’m sorry to hear that the Social’s Security’s ‘Ticket to Work’ program hasn’t been a helpful resource for you. Navigating the intricacies of disability insurance can be challenging and is not an uncommon concern among cancer survivors and patients that are considering returning to work. We understand that protecting your insurance is a priority, especially when you aren’t sure how treatment will affect your return to the workforce. Although we’re not experts in the nuances of disability, we can recommend the following organizations, as they should be able to provide you with the legal expertise that you need. They should be able to help walk you through your options and hopefully figure out your best course of action:
For really helpful quick guides and state resources we also recommend you check out Triage Cancer’s website: www.triagecancer.org
Cancer and Careers has a ton of resources and information that can aid in your job search, when you feel you are ready to return to work. Please feel free to contact us with any questions at cancerandcareers@cew.org or 646-929-8032.
