I have stage four cancer and can financially afford to retire early. I am eligible for 18 months of COBRA and after that will have to be thankful that there is Obamacare to get me to age 65. My manager is fighting my decision to retire; she's offered 30 hours with full benefits; she's even told me I can log on in the morning and do almost nothing. If I have 30 good hours, I don't want them to be at work. And my moral fiber will not allow me to log on, collect a salary, and do little work. How do I get my manager to understand my position, when she thinks she's handing me a perfect solution? HR is also on her side.

Dear Raina, What an unusual situation you have found yourself in! It is clear that you have made the decision that is right for you and I applaud you! However I am not sure if you feel guilty that you want to walk away because you think that you should feel fortunate to have your employer do whatever it takes to keep you or is it that you feel loyalty to them?
Whatever it is that is preventing you from leaving your job psychologically, I think you should sit down and create a plan that spells out how you intend to pass along your responsibilities in your job, and how you plan on spending your retirement. Then identify a final date for your job, ask to meet with your manager and HR and tell them what your plan is. Tell them that you are incredibly appreciative of everything they have and want to do for you however it is time for you to leave your job. And it is no longer a topic of discussion (in your words o course.)
Good luck!
Julie
