I want to make contact with a development director for whom I did foundation grant writing but don't want to sound like I'm begging for a job. I last had contact with her in 2013 and donated to their gala last year without attending.
What's the best way to reach out? I could offer to do more contract work or see if they could use a volunteer on a government grant project. Also, should I divulge, in confidence, about what has been going on for me or not?

Hi Holli,
In terms of reaching out, I would recommend checking out our blog "Networking Even After Losing Touch": http://www.cancerandcareers.org/blog/networking-even-after-losing-t
I think that offering to volunteer would be a great way to get your foot back in the door and could lead to a paid position down the road. I would also recommend checking out the Networking section of our Job Search Toolkit for more ideas (which you can download or order for free): http://www.cancerandcareers.org/publication_orders/new
In terms of disclosing what you've been going through, that is a personal decision. I think that you need to take a number of things into consideration when thinking this through, such as the pros and cons, what your relationship with her is like, etc.
Best,
Sarah, Manager of Programs, Cancer and Careers
