Job Search,
Work/Life/Cancer Balance
Hello!
I have had an unusual cancer journey in that I have had cancer 6x. I have a rare genetic mutation called Li-Fraumeni syndrome that predisposes me to many cancers. All things considered, I'm doing amazingly well. Despite all the cancer that I have endured, I am healthy, active and fit. I am a mountain bike, rock climber, hiker, weight lifter and snowboarder doing all the things I love to do in Colorado. I recently took some time off from work to recover from lung cancer surgery. For the past 20+ years, I have worked as a website designer and developer with a focus on WordPress development. I am hoping to get back to work possibly with a company or org in the cancer space. I have done a fair amount of searching online but have come up short. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Cancer and Careers Staff Comment:
Hi Brian,
Thank you for reaching out to Cancer and Careers and sharing your journey with us. Your resilience and passion for staying active and pursuing what you love—both personally and professionally—are truly inspiring.
I want to start by offering a few initial suggestions as you explore opportunities to bring your skills and experiences into the cancer space.
Explore Cancer-Focused Organizations: Make a list of organizations you would like to work with and check out their job postings. These can be found directly on their website or through a simple google search.
Check Niche Job Boards: Websites such as Idealist, Work for Good or Tech Jobs for Good list roles in mission-driven organizations, including those in the healthcare and cancer advocacy sectors.
Network Within the Cancer Community: Join LinkedIn groups or forums related to cancer survivorship and advocacy. Attending events like survivorship conferences or digital health meetups might also connect you with people working in the cancer space who could use your skills.
Reach Out for Informational Interviews: Identify individuals in roles or organizations that interest you and request informational interviews. This can provide insights into the industry and help you position your skills effectively.
Additionally, I recommend checking out:
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to cancerandcareers@cew.org with any questions or requests for additional information—we’d be happy to assist further.
Wishing you the very best in this next chapter,
Sissy
