Two years ago I underwent Head and Neck Cancer surgery at Mskcc and chemo and radiation
following same. In the middle of all of this my mother became very ill and asked me to
move in with her to help. She died this past April and ever since her estate went into probate
my siblings have demanded that I leave.
I retained a lawyer I have a court date but I also have an order for eviction. I had returned to
work finally in September and had to commute to the school district where I was employed.
I was using an estate car that I had used and had been put partially in my name when it was
removed from the driveway in the middle of the night. I lost the temporary job I did have
because there was no way to use public transportation.
After Christmas they demanded I vacate and without a job no one will rent to me. I called the
state and the county and they do not have homeless shelters in NJ that are open to cancer
patients. They cannot even get cancer patients rides.
I have an attorney- but she has thus far been unsuccessful. I do not seem to qualify for anything.
I receive 1000 in ss but that goes for copays and meds. One rx if I had to pay for it would be 2500
per month generic. This is not covered by medicare so I have to keep working for the insurance.
I lost part of my voice range as a result of the treatments but it is rather a mostly invisible disability.
If you are around me longer enough or are a medical professional you can see it. I do not qualify for
disability ? unemployment? or I guess consideration from my family. I asked the state of New Jersey
what I was supposed to do and they said your family . I have asked my family and no one is in a position
to help.
I have called everywhere and been everywhere.
I work with the disabled population so I have exhausted their information and mine.
Thank you

Cancer and Careers Staff Comment:
Hi Susan,
Thanks for reaching out to us and apologies for the delayed response. We recently redesigned our website and are having some issues with the alerts when new questions come in, so I'm very sorry about that.
It sounds like you've been through a lot recently, I'm sorry that it's been so difficult. Your questions are generally legal, so I would recommend that you reach out to the National Cancer Legal Services Network, they should be able to provide some helpful information: http://www.nclsn.org/
I also recommend that you take a look at our Resource Database, we have an entire section on financial resources: http://www.cancerandcareers.org/resources/categories/financial
I hope that this is helpful!
Best,
Sarah, Manager of Programs, Cancer and Careers
