Workplace Politics
I have been out for cancer treatment since July 2020. I had 2 cancers at the same time. I was told not to return until I was finished with treatment due to covid. I recently was contacted about my insurance benefits running out, I have not been full time since april of 2020. a week later I saw the job posted and thought it was a coincidence. I got paperwork to get cobra insurance and it says the reason for offering cobra is due to employment ending. Guess what I still have cancer & chemo to finish. Mow I have to start all over after 9+ years. Is this legal or are they waiting for me to say I quit?

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for writing to us. I’m sorry to hear that on top of your diagnoses and treatment, your employer is handling this situation in this way and that you had to learn of their actions by seeing your job posted online. I would imagine this feels disrespectful, especially after 9 years with the company.
With that said, from what you've described this sounds like a legal situation and Cancer and Careers can’t provide legal advice. Our immediate recommendation would be to reach out to a legal organization to discuss all the specifics of your situation and determine a course of action.
A good place to start is the National Cancer Legal Services Network – which provides listings of pro-bono legal services by state. You can find more information at http://www.nclsn.org/.
You might also want to check out http://apps.americanbar.org/legalservices/lris/directory and www.lawhelp.org

I hope this is helpful. You can also reach us at cancerandcareers@cew.org or 646-929-8032 if you have any additional questions.
