I have been in the global incentive market for many years and also owned three franchises in Cincinnati that are now closed. The global marketing job was great and exciting, but travel is 85% and I am not sure my body is up to it, considering breast cancer and age. Cancer is at bay. My visual and creative skills are highly tuned but I have no formal education. Graphic design is out, it is all done on the computer. I am 55 and broke or I would start another business. Any ideas?

Hi Karin,
I am so glad that your cancer is in remission! I am not sure what you mean by global marketing unless you mean sales? If so, then these skills are highly transferable as you know. It's just a matter of identifying a few different industries and exploring possible sales positions with them that don't require as much travel.
Another area you can explore is inside sales or customer service as you have had plenty of experience with these two functional areas as a business owner.
Also, since you are so familiar with the incentive business, why not approach some of the local companies in this business and offer to help them as a consultant?
It's always tough for me to give people ideas for new careers or types of work to pursue with such little information. This said, I would take some assessments to help you hone in on the specific skills you possess which you would be willing to use again as well as interests that you can explore. There are many books available in the career section of your local library including mine (sorry about the plug) called I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This.
It's hard to take an objective look at yourself in order to identify and decide on a new career so that's why putting information on paper is important and useful. You clearly are entrepreneurial, creative and able to influence others to make buying decisions. These are very marketable skill sets so it's key that you realize this and do some information gathering to learn about the many jobs that exist out there that would be less stressful and bring in the income you need.
Good luck and if you want more information, please don't hesitate to write again.
Take care,
Julie
