You’ve got the interview – congratulations! While this is exciting news, there are a lot of things to think about and prepare for which can feel overwhelming, especially after a cancer diagnosis. If you are currently going through treatment, it might be a good idea to first consult with your healthcare team about the type of job you are interviewing for and the best options available to balance work and treatment. Once you have that information on hand, it’s time to think about preparing for the interview.
Mock interviews are a great way to practice for real job interviews and can help boost your confidence on the big day. When thinking about what questions to prepare for, keep in mind that an interview is not a one-sided conversation. You are also interviewing the employer to see if this is a right fit for you. The questions you ask your interviewer are just as important as the ones you will be asked. Glassdoor recently released an article on 8 Questions to Ask an Interviewer to help guide interviewees on the types of questions you might consider asking. Below are our top three:
What do the day-to-day responsibilities of the role look like? The answer to this question can give you a sense of the types of tasks and responsibilities that will be asked of you. It is a great way to see how your current skills and abilities fit into the role, and if that role suits your needs.
What are the company’s values? What characteristics do you look for in employees in order to represent those values? This question can tell you a lot about company culture and the type of employer you will have. It can also reveal if this is the type of environment you will feel comfortable in.
What do you see as the most challenging aspect of this job? Getting a well-rounded understanding of the position you are applying for is crucial when considering if this is the type of role you want to pursue.
