It’s not uncommon for one’s cancer experience to inspire them to try something different with their career. Whether it is realizing a new passion, seeking an alternative work schedule, or simply wanting to venture down a new path, many survivors experience the desire for change. Yet the process can feel like an overwhelming challenge. Where do you begin? What do you know about yourself? How do you cast yourself as the candidate you need and/or want to be to get a new position?
Last month, as part of our Balancing Work & Cancer Webinar Series, we hosted a webinar on Career Change to answer these questions and more! The session was presented by our seasoned career coach Julie Jansen, who has a great deal of experience working with individuals looking for a change or a fresh start to their career.
In this session, Julie explained what constitutes “meaning” in terms of a career, how to properly assess yourself so that you are able to realistically identify which direction to move in, and how to create an action plan for doing so. Though the live session was held on June 7th, you can access a recording of it via our Video Archive.
We also offer a variety of services that can be useful when deciding to pursue a new field. Our Resume Review Service can help you find the right way to highlight transferable skills and experience that would be well utilized in a new position. You can also pose a question through our Ask a Career Coach program, if you’re feeling stuck or need help figuring out “the next step.” And finally, our Job Search Toolkit is an excellent guide for navigating the job-hunt process, whether in the area you were working in before your diagnosis or in a new field.
