We’re dedicating the blog this week to conversations around Artificial Intelligence (or AI). The topic is in the news a lot, but how can we understand it better and utilize it in useful ways in our own lives? Looking for work can be a daunting and overwhelming experience, especially for those navigating the job search after a cancer diagnosis. From researching potential fields or positions, to working on your resume and personalizing cover letters, to prepping for interviews, it can be challenging to know where to start and to stay organized. But what if there was a tool—along with Cancer and Careers—to help you streamline the job search process?
One example, ChatGPT—an artificial intelligence chatbot that can carry “human like” conversations with people— is transforming job searching both for those hiring and those looking. According to an article from Indeed, ChatGPT may be helpful to:
- Research Companies – Learn where to start your research and obtain information about potential employers without having to click through multiple websites.
- Write Resume and Cover Letters – Use it for guidance to draft your resume and cover letters.
- Prepare for Job Interviews - Explore potential interview questions and responses. Note that providing as many details as possible about the role you’re interviewing for (e.g., job title and company, and your level of experience) will garner more accurate results.
While AI may be a valuable tool in simplifying the job search process and may help you save time and energy, it’s important to highlight that it can’t replace you and everything you bring to the table – your voice is truly important while job searching! AI can be a good place to start, and it can provide great ideas, but it should not be used as the final product (do not copy/paste AI’s responses verbatim). At the end of the day, you know yourself, work history and goals best Use this tool (with caution!) as an assistant– it can help you research, brainstorm, edit and prep.
