According to the Caregiving in the US, 2020 Report, 61% of caregivers were employed at some point in the preceding year while caregiving. That means most caregivers are balancing their caregiving needs with their work needs as well as their personal needs. So how do you make a plan to address all of these competing needs and obligations? We recommend asking yourself a series of questions in order to figure out how best to move forward. Keeping in mind, as you ask yourself these questions, even more questions will probably pop up and that some answers may be in conflict with each other. That is normal and by. thinking through these questions you will begin to see your priorities take shape, allowing you to make informed decisions that will best serve you and your loved one you’re caring for.
Some questions to ask yourself when making decisions about how to balance everything may include:
- What are your loved one’s needs?
- What are your needs and wants?
- Will you experience a financial impact related to caregiving?
- How will your caregiving responsibilities impact your work-life?
- How is your identity connected to your work?
- Have your career priorities changed?
- How will you make time for/prioritize self-care?
- What are the other personal/family obligations that need to be prioritized?
