Session 1 wrapped!
Thursday March 3rd marked the first session of our accredited Educational Series for Healthcare Professionals, “Practical Advice and Tools to Balance Cancer and Employment.” And, what a success it was! During the hour long teleconference and webinar, Laura Mosiello LCSW-R, Oncology Social Worker and Consultant, along with Kate Sweeney, Executive Director of Cancer and Careers, spoke to 206 medical professionals nation-wide (a record breaking number for this program!) on topics including: sharing a cancer diagnosis in the workplace, creating a workable schedule during treatment, modifying a work environment to make it more comfortable, and facing a “new” normal with cancer, to name a few. They fielded questions from the social workers, nurses, patient navigators and doctors who are often a cancer survivor’s first line of defense. Through this dialogue our panel of experts offered answers, opinions and resources for the medical community and in turn to their patients. In one incredibly inspiring moment, a number of healthcare professionals dialed in to offer alternative stories and suggestions to their colleagues hundreds of miles away. The out-pour of responses highlighted the large portion of people managing cancer in the workplace, and their need for answers. This is the purpose of the Educational Series for Healthcare Professionals: to arm the medical community with the appropriate practical and legal insights, so that when their patient has a question, a need, a concern, they are equipped with the information to help. Healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to help their patients navigate between cancer and work.
