It was lucky number 7 for our National Conference on Work & Cancer, held on Friday, June 23rd. The full-day knowledge-share, held annually at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan, brought together familiar faces, accessible experts, new contacts and undeniable energy.
CAC’s Executive Director Kate Sweeney, who took the stage to welcome a full house and kick off the day’s (very) full schedule, spoke candidly about the Conference’s purpose. “Today, our 11 sessions, covering everything from your legal rights, to your job search, to your nutrition, are about providing the information you need to find the answers — the path that is right for you. Today, is about you. This is your community, and we’re in this together.”
Stats from the event confirm what an engaging community it was: We welcomed 374 guests, including 31 travel scholarship recipients, from 29 states and the District of Columbia. There were repeat attendees ready to talk about familiar themes and new additions. There were new neighbors who brought fresh eyes and original insight. We took notes, passed the microphone, shared feedback, broke bread, networked over cookies and coffee, and enjoyed being right there in the moment, surrounded by learning and giving.
Kate ended her remarks with a promise — one that our entire staff feels honored to uphold: “We welcome you, encourage you and support you, every step of the way.”
