Hi, I’m Alicia, a new staff member at Cancer and Careers. I’m also an old staff member, since I originally came on board in 2002, when the program was just getting started. There were only two of us back then, with a lot happening all at once. We were launching an ambitious website, creating our first publications, figuring out how to reach people when they needed us (because we knew they were out there), while also finding supporters who believed in the vision — helping anyone with cancer continue on the job. The evolution has been a little breathtaking. The fact that Cancer and Careers is now the definitive national authority on work and cancer is a testament to what can be done using “natural resources” — heart, grit, ingenuity and a lot of teamwork. The program has so many people to thank.
Even after I “left” I’ve stayed connected to CAC by doing lots of projects over the years. My recent consulting work includes copy-writing for our latest Beauty of Giving luncheon, at which we honored Sonia Kashuk, and connecting with Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), another channel for helping people on the job.
Now I’m ready for what’s next. My new permanent position spans development and communications, which is why I’m currently helping with our “Beauty with Benefits” broadcast on QVC this April 28. If you haven’t yet seen the list of brands that will be participating, take a look here. Now three years strong, with more than $3M raised, the event brings out the best in everyone it touches.
Thank you for welcoming me back. Cancer and Careers is a nice place to come home to.
