Our latest Balancing Work & Cancer webinar was held on June 7th and we were joined by career coach Julie Jansen. The webinar provided valuable insights and practical tips on creating an effective resume, sharpening interviewing skills, addressing resume gaps, mastering the art of networking and more!
When it comes to crafting a resume that stands out in today's job market, Julie emphasized that it’s important to be aware of the key elements that will make your resume pass the ATS (Applicant Tracking System software) screening and catch the attention of hiring managers. During the webinar, Julie shared resume best practices, including:
- Emphasize past achievements and accomplishments by using quantifiable and measurable information
- Two pages only, one page is for a recent college grad
- Must have a profile or summary paragraph on top
- Must have keywords for ATS to scan
- Avoid using long paragraphs, long sentences, or large blocks of text or too little content and trite or cliché phrases such as “effective communicator” or “detail oriented”
If you’re working on your resume and would like free, personalized feedback from one of our professional career coaches, you can submit your resume to our Resume Review Service.
In addition to resume tips, the webinar also covered networking, which plays a significant role in the job search process. Did you know that most people you meet have at least 250 contacts? While job boards can be useful to research job descriptions and companies, I was surprised to learn that approximately 85% of all jobs are found through networking – make sure to make networking a habit! You can read more about starting to network and networking techniques on our website.
The webinar also shared tips and tricks for interviewing and addressing the resume gap – be sure to keep an eye out for the archived video to access all the valuable insights and information shared! We look forward to seeing you at our next Balancing Work & Cancer Webinar: Self-Care: Practical Approaches at Work and Beyond on July 12th. Register today!
