When looking for a job or working to advance your career, it’s important to present your skills in a way that makes you stand out among your colleagues, or the pool of applicants being considered. Being bilingual is one of those abilities that may help position you as a strong candidate, either for a promotion or a new job. However, sometimes speaking multiple languages comes so naturally that people don’t highlight it on their resumes and miss the opportunity to grab an employer’s attention. Fortunately, there are many ways you can show off your bilingual skills on your resume.
An article from Fast Company shares tips on how to leverage your multilingual skills to get a new job or a promotion at your current job.
- Specify your level of proficiency: List your native proficiency as well as other languages you speak on your resume skills section and emphasize the times you used your bilingual capability on the experience section of your resume where you discuss the accomplishments you had in a given role.
- Reframe your experience: Share on your cover letter or during a job interview how being bilingual has informed your worldviews and the ways in which you interact and relate to others.
- Find opportunities and leverage your skills for compensation: Research how much your language skills are worth in your field and/or similar positions and ensure you’re fairly compensated.
