Networking has been cited by career coaches and hiring managers as the most effective way to get a job when looking for work. However, many people tend to shy away from the practice. Whether that is due to a fear of asking for help, worries about being un/underqualified, or overall anxiety, the fact remains it is a necessary step in job searching.
Given it's weight in landing a new job, it's wise to be well-versed in how to effectively build a network. Fast Company recently published an article on The 3 Secrets to Building a Great Professional Network, and it's not as scary or difficult as many may assume!
A strong professional network is integral to professional success, as such relationships can be critical to professional advancement and promotions. It's a good idea to think of the bigger picture. If you do connect with one person, how many other professionals may they be able to connect you with? The three "secrets" to effective networking, as identified by Fast Company are: trust, letting go, and intentionality
Trust: This is about having faith in the sincerity of the person you are trying to connect with. If you don't trust them and/or the process, networking will not be fruitful.
Letting go: Don't feel responsible for the outcomes. Networking includes both asking for help but also helping others. Letting go in this instance means not having expectations for anything in return. While reciprocity is a good approach to networking, it should never be expected.
Intentionality: This one is particularly important when you are looking to establish an effective network. Hitting the 'connect' button on every professional you come across on LinkedIn will create a large, but potentially not useful network. Be proactive and intentional about who you wish to connect with and how you go about it. For instance, a more personalized introduction versus something very canned and scripted can go a long way in terms of establishing positive and productive connections.
Networking continues to instill fear in many who are actively job searching but it doesn't have to be so scary! Cancer and Careers offers numerous resources to help familiarize and become comfortable with the idea and practice of professional networking. A few of these resources include:
